Merchants & Marine Bank was started in 1932 by a group of citizens who sensed the potential this area strategically located on the Gulf held for industry and business; in turn, bringing new people into the area. Residents would need banking services, such as checking accounts, and loans for housing and transportation.
The new institution opened on January 11, 1932. It has operated continuously ever since. The Bank then had the assets required to open the doors - $25,000. There were two offices, one in Pascagoula and one in Moss Point, and a total of four employees. There were less than 7,000 people in Moss Point and Pascagoula.
